A weight of 40 tons per acre in itself almost precludes transport to a central facility for fermentation. Also, the sugars in the stalk began to "sour" upon harvest or from freezing in the field.

Its requires 1/3 as much water as sugarcane, and can be harvested 2x/yr. Sugarcane is propagated from stem cuttings (4.5-6 tons/ha), sweet sorghum is sown with seed (4.5 kg/ha). It produces up to 7,000 litres/ha of ethanol.

Green Energy Resources predicts $50/ton biomass woodchip prices within the next year. The current US price level is $25-32/ton. Demand caused by the 25-30 new power plants planned in New England by 2010 does not include industry ... or cellulostic ethanol
