There is no doubt that one of the reasons for the sudden rise in food prices has been the decision by many farmers in Europe and North America to switch production to growing cereals for biofuels.

UNICA says subsidies in America and Europe for farmers and biofuels may be one element of the rising price of food which has caused riots in Haiti and other countries. But Jank insists Brazil is not contributing to that development.

"I am not in favor of producing ethanol from corn or other food crops," da Silva said in his address to the conference. Corn ethanol, as produced in the U.S., is "shot up with subsidies and shielded behind tariff barriers."

Lula da Silva stressed the value of the "golden revolution" which brings together "the earth, the sun, labour and cutting-edge technology" and which could be exported to Africa's Savannah, "so similar to the Brazilian Cerrado".

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva blasted wealthy nations for their punitive agricultural tariffs and urged them Sunday to "stop your hypocrisy" and start buying Brazilian biofuel.
