Land is a finite resource. Using all cultivable land for energy crops would not supply even current energy demand and land used for energy crops is not available for food. Good graph on km per ha

With corn in demand for ethanol and wheat prices spiking because of drought, farmers are converting more of the potholes to cropland.

A weight of 40 tons per acre in itself almost precludes transport to a central facility for fermentation. Also, the sugars in the stalk began to "sour" upon harvest or from freezing in the field.
